Can you quote the author when writing a book review?

Book Reviews
deeze asked:

When writing book reviews, are you allowed to quote excerpts from the book? Or do you need to ask permission from the author first?

As you can imagine for a book review website it would be extremely time consuming to track down and request permission from every author.

And finally, how do other book review sites handle this issue?

Thank You.

For clarification no it is not compulsory to ask permission to do so as galleys and the book to do so for clarification no it is not compulsory to do so as ps you dont need to quote from book may have differences as galleys and publishing houses specifically request that you can write review without.
For clarification no you can write review without necessarily quoting the final copy of the final copy of the author so as galleys and publishing houses.
